Number |
1 u |
1 u + 2 |
Value |
0.6 |
0.4 |
Total value |
0.6 u |
0.4 u + 0.8 |
(a)
Number of mandarin oranges that Zara bought = 1 u
Number of dragon fruits that Hazel bought = 1 u + 2
Amount that Zara paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Hazel paid = 0.4(1 u + 2) = 0.4 u + 0.8
If Hazel spent another $0.40, both Hazel and Zara would spend the same amount.
0.6 u = 0.4 u + 0.8 + 0.4
0.6 u - 0.4 u = 0.8 + 0.4
0.2 u = 1.2
1 u = 1.2 ÷ 0.2 = 6
Number of dragon fruits that Hazel bought
= 1 u + 2
= 6 + 2
= 8
(b)
Amount that Zara spent on the mandarin oranges
= 0.6 u
= 0.6 x 6
= $3.60
Answer(s): (a) 6; (b) $3.60
