0.6 |
Total value |
0.8 u |
0.6 u + 1.8 |
(a)
Number of limes that Olivia bought = 1 u
Number of papayas that Jane bought = 1 u + 3
Amount that Olivia paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Jane paid = 0.6(1 u + 3) = 0.6 u + 1.8
If Jane spent another $0.40, both Jane and Olivia would spend the same amount.
0.8 u = 0.6 u + 1.8 + 0.4
0.8 u - 0.6 u = 1.8 + 0.4
0.2 u = 2.2
1 u = 2.2 ÷ 0.2 = 11
Number of papayas that Jane bought
= 1 u + 3
= 11 + 3
= 14
(b)
Amount that Olivia spent on the limes
= 0.8 u
= 0.8 x 11
= $8.80
Answer(s): (a) 11; (b) $8.80
