A fruit stall sold coconuts at 70¢ and kiwis at 50¢ each. Mary bought some coconuts and Tammy bought some kiwis from the stall. Tammy spent $0.30 less than Mary, but had 3 fruits more than Mary.

1. How many kiwis did Tammy buy?
2. How much did Mary spend on the coconuts?

Number of coconuts that Mary bought = 1 u
Number of kiwis that Tammy bought = 1 u + 3

Amount that Mary paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Tammy paid = 0.5(1 u + 3) = 0.5 u + 1.5

If Tammy spent another $0.30, both Tammy and Mary would spend the same amount.

0.7 u = 0.5 u + 1.5 + 0.3
0.7 u - 0.5 u = 1.5 + 0.3
0.2 u = 1.8

1 u = 1.8 ÷ 0.2 = 9

Number of kiwis that Tammy bought
= 1 u + 3
= 9 + 3
= 12

= 0.7 u 
= 0.7 x 9 
= $6.30
