A fruit stall sold tomatoes at 60¢ and limes at 30¢ each. Abi bought some tomatoes and Elyse bought some limes from the stall. Abi spent $1.80 more than Elyse, but had 5 fruits fewer than Elyse.

1. How many tomatoes did Abi buy?
2. How much did Elyse spend on the limes?

Number of limes that Elyse bought = 1 u + 5

Amount that Abi paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Elyse paid = 0.3(1 u + 5) = 0.3 u + 1.5

If Elyse spent another $1.80, both Elyse and Abi would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.3 u + 1.5 + 1.8
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 1.5 + 1.8
0.3 u = 3.3

1 u = 3.3 ÷ 0.3 = 11

Number of tomatoes that Abi bought
= 1 u
= 11

= 0.3 u + 1.5
= 0.3 x 11 + 1.5
= 3.3 + 1.5
= $4.80
