A fruit stall sold limes at 70¢ and dates at 50¢ each. Tiffany bought some limes and Olivia bought some dates from the stall. Tiffany spent $0.10 more than Olivia, but had 3 fruits fewer than Olivia.

1. How many limes did Tiffany buy?
2. How much did Olivia spend on the dates?

Number of limes that Tiffany bought = 1 u
Number of dates that Olivia bought = 1 u + 3

Amount that Tiffany paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Olivia paid = 0.5(1 u + 3) = 0.5 u + 1.5

If Olivia spent another $0.10, both Olivia and Tiffany would spend the same amount.

0.7 u = 0.5 u + 1.5 + 0.1
0.7 u - 0.5 u = 1.5 + 0.1
0.2 u = 1.6

1 u = 1.6 ÷ 0.2 = 8

Number of limes that Tiffany bought
= 1 u
= 8

Amount that Olivia spent on the dates
= 0.5 u + 1.5
= 0.5 x 8 + 1.5
= 4 + 1.5
= $5.50
