- How many limes did Erika buy?
- How much did Marion spend on the mangosteens?

Limes |
Mangosteens |
Number |
1 u |
1 u + 6 |
Value |
0.6 |
0.3 |
Total value |
0.6 u |
0.3 u + 1.8 |
(a)
Number of limes that Erika bought = 1 u
Number of mangosteens that Marion bought = 1 u + 6
Amount that Erika paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Marion paid = 0.3(1 u + 6) = 0.3 u + 1.8
If Marion spent another $1.50, both Marion and Erika would spend the same amount.
0.6 u = 0.3 u + 1.8 + 1.5
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 1.8 + 1.5
0.3 u = 3.3
1 u = 3.3 ÷ 0.3 = 11
Number of limes that Erika bought
= 1 u
= 11
(b)
Amount that Marion spent on the mangosteens
= 0.3 u + 1.8
= 0.3 x 11 + 1.8
= 3.3 + 1.8
= $5.10
Answer(s): (a) 11; (b) $5.10
