- How much did Xuan spend on the mangosteens?

Mangosteens |
Dates |
Number |
1 u |
1 u + 3 |
Value |
0.6 |
0.3 |
Total value |
0.6 u |
0.3 u + 0.9 |
(a)
Number of mangosteens that Xuan bought = 1 u
Number of dates that Hilda bought = 1 u + 3
Amount that Xuan paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Hilda paid = 0.3(1 u + 3) = 0.3 u + 0.9
If Hilda spent another $1.20, both Hilda and Xuan would spend the same amount.
0.6 u = 0.3 u + 0.9 + 1.2
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 0.9 + 1.2
0.3 u = 2.1
1 u = 2.1 ÷ 0.3 = 7
Number of dates that Hilda bought
= 1 u + 3
= 7 + 3
= 10
(b)
Amount that Xuan spent on the mangosteens
= 0.6 u
= 0.6 x 7
= $4.20
Answer(s): (a) 7; (b) $4.20
