A fruit stall sold mangosteens at 80¢ and peaches at 50¢ each. Vanessa bought some mangosteens and Roshel bought some peaches from the stall. Vanessa spent $0.10 more than Roshel, but had 4 fruits fewer than Roshel.

1. How many mangosteens did Vanessa buy?
2. How much did Roshel spend on the peaches?

Number of mangosteens that Vanessa bought = 1 u
Number of peaches that Roshel bought = 1 u + 4

Amount that Vanessa paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Roshel paid = 0.5(1 u + 4) = 0.5 u + 2

If Roshel spent another $0.10, both Roshel and Vanessa would spend the same amount.

0.8 u = 0.5 u + 2 + 0.1
0.8 u - 0.5 u = 2 + 0.1
0.3 u = 2.1

1 u = 2.1 ÷ 0.3 = 7

Number of mangosteens that Vanessa bought
= 1 u
= 7

Amount that Roshel spent on the peaches
= 0.5 u + 2
= 0.5 x 7 + 2
= 3.5 + 2
= $5.50
