A fruit stall sold dates at 80¢ and papayas at 50¢ each. Ivory bought some dates and Zara bought some papayas from the stall. Zara spent $2.10 less than Ivory, but had 3 fruits more than Ivory.

1. How many papayas did Zara buy?
2. How much did Ivory spend on the dates?

Number of dates that Ivory bought = 1 u
Number of papayas that Zara bought = 1 u + 3

Amount that Ivory paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Zara paid = 0.5(1 u + 3) = 0.5 u + 1.5

If Zara spent another $2.10, both Zara and Ivory would spend the same amount.

0.8 u = 0.5 u + 1.5 + 2.1
0.8 u - 0.5 u = 1.5 + 2.1
0.3 u = 3.6

1 u = 3.6 ÷ 0.3 = 12

Number of papayas that Zara bought
= 1 u + 3
= 12 + 3
= 15

= 0.8 u 
= 0.8 x 12 
= $9.60
