A fruit stall sold mangosteens at 80¢ and apricots at 50¢ each. Roshel bought some mangosteens and Esther bought some apricots from the stall. Esther spent $0.60 less than Roshel, but had 3 fruits more than Roshel.

1. How many apricots did Esther buy?
2. How much did Roshel spend on the mangosteens?

Number of mangosteens that Roshel bought = 1 u
Number of apricots that Esther bought = 1 u + 3

Amount that Roshel paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Esther paid = 0.5(1 u + 3) = 0.5 u + 1.5

If Esther spent another $0.60, both Esther and Roshel would spend the same amount.

0.8 u = 0.5 u + 1.5 + 0.6
0.8 u - 0.5 u = 1.5 + 0.6
0.3 u = 2.1

1 u = 2.1 ÷ 0.3 = 7

Number of apricots that Esther bought
= 1 u + 3
= 7 + 3
= 10

Amount that Roshel spent on the mangosteens
= 0.8 u 
= 0.8 x 7 
= $5.60
