- How much did Min spend on the guavas?

Guavas |
Mangosteens |
Number |
1 u |
1 u + 2 |
Value |
0.9 |
0.6 |
Total value |
0.9 u |
0.6 u + 1.2 |
(a)
Number of guavas that Min bought = 1 u
Number of mangosteens that Anna bought = 1 u + 2
Amount that Min paid = 0.9 x 1 u = 0.9 u
Amount that Anna paid = 0.6(1 u + 2) = 0.6 u + 1.2
If Anna spent another $2.10, both Anna and Min would spend the same amount.
0.9 u = 0.6 u + 1.2 + 2.1
0.9 u - 0.6 u = 1.2 + 2.1
0.3 u = 3.3
1 u = 3.3 ÷ 0.3 = 11
Number of mangosteens that Anna bought
= 1 u + 2
= 11 + 2
= 13
(b)
Amount that Min spent on the guavas
= 0.9 u
= 0.9 x 11
= $9.90
Answer(s): (a) 11; (b) $9.90
