- How much did Dana spend on the dates?

Lemons |
Number |
1 u |
1 u + 2 |
Value |
0.6 |
0.3 |
Total value |
0.6 u |
0.3 u + 0.6 |
(a)
Number of dates that Dana bought = 1 u
Number of lemons that Victoria bought = 1 u + 2
Amount that Dana paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Victoria paid = 0.3(1 u + 2) = 0.3 u + 0.6
If Victoria spent another $2.10, both Victoria and Dana would spend the same amount.
0.6 u = 0.3 u + 0.6 + 2.1
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 0.6 + 2.1
0.3 u = 2.7
1 u = 2.7 ÷ 0.3 = 9
Number of lemons that Victoria bought
= 1 u + 2
= 9 + 2
= 11
(b)
Amount that Dana spent on the dates
= 0.6 u
= 0.6 x 9
= $5.40
Answer(s): (a) 9; (b) $5.40
