A fruit stall sold apples at 80¢ and coconuts at 50¢ each. Gwen bought some apples and Raeann bought some coconuts from the stall. Gwen spent $0.50 more than Raeann, but had 5 fruits fewer than Raeann.

1. How many apples did Gwen buy?
2. How much did Raeann spend on the coconuts?

Number of apples that Gwen bought = 1 u
Number of coconuts that Raeann bought = 1 u + 5

Amount that Gwen paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Raeann paid = 0.5(1 u + 5) = 0.5 u + 2.5

If Raeann spent another $0.50, both Raeann and Gwen would spend the same amount.

0.8 u = 0.5 u + 2.5 + 0.5
0.8 u - 0.5 u = 2.5 + 0.5
0.3 u = 3

1 u = 3 ÷ 0.3 = 10

Number of apples that Gwen bought
= 1 u
= 10

Amount that Raeann spent on the coconuts
= 0.5 u + 2.5
= 0.5 x 10 + 2.5
= 5 + 2.5
= $7.50
