1 u + 4 |

0.4 |
Total value |
0.7 u |
0.4 u + 1.6 |
(a)
Number of dragon fruits that Nora bought = 1 u
Number of tomatoes that Ivory bought = 1 u + 4
Amount that Nora paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Ivory paid = 0.4(1 u + 4) = 0.4 u + 1.6
If Ivory spent another $0.80, both Ivory and Nora would spend the same amount.
0.7 u = 0.4 u + 1.6 + 0.8
0.7 u - 0.4 u = 1.6 + 0.8
0.3 u = 2.4
1 u = 2.4 ÷ 0.3 = 8
Number of dragon fruits that Nora bought
= 1 u
= 8
(b)
Amount that Ivory spent on the tomatoes
= 0.4 u + 1.6
= 0.4 x 8 + 1.6
= 3.2 + 1.6
= $4.80
Answer(s): (a) 8; (b) $4.80
