A fruit stall sold apples at 80¢ and papayas at 60¢ each. Esther bought some apples and Tammy bought some papayas from the stall. Tammy spent $0.40 less than Esther, but had 3 fruits more than Esther.

1. How many papayas did Tammy buy?
2. How much did Esther spend on the apples?

Number of apples that Esther bought = 1 u
Number of papayas that Tammy bought = 1 u + 3

Amount that Esther paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Tammy paid = 0.6(1 u + 3) = 0.6 u + 1.8

If Tammy spent another $0.40, both Tammy and Esther would spend the same amount.

0.8 u = 0.6 u + 1.8 + 0.4
0.8 u - 0.6 u = 1.8 + 0.4
0.2 u = 2.2

1 u = 2.2 ÷ 0.2 = 11

Number of papayas that Tammy bought
= 1 u + 3
= 11 + 3
= 14

= 0.8 u 
= 0.8 x 11 
= $8.80
