A fruit stall sold dates at 80¢ and kiwis at 50¢ each. Min bought some dates and Betty bought some kiwis from the stall. Betty spent $0.60 less than Min, but had 3 fruits more than Min.

1. How many kiwis did Betty buy?
2. How much did Min spend on the dates?

Number of dates that Min bought = 1 u
Number of kiwis that Betty bought = 1 u + 3

Amount that Min paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Betty paid = 0.5(1 u + 3) = 0.5 u + 1.5

If Betty spent another $0.60, both Betty and Min would spend the same amount.

0.8 u = 0.5 u + 1.5 + 0.6
0.8 u - 0.5 u = 1.5 + 0.6
0.3 u = 2.1

1 u = 2.1 ÷ 0.3 = 7

Number of kiwis that Betty bought
= 1 u + 3
= 7 + 3
= 10

Amount that Min spent on the dates
= 0.8 u 
= 0.8 x 7 
= $5.60
