A fruit stall sold avocados at 60¢ and dragon fruits at 30¢ each. Natalie bought some avocados and Esther bought some dragon fruits from the stall. Esther spent $0.90 less than Natalie, but had 5 fruits more than Natalie.

1. How many dragon fruits did Esther buy?
2. How much did Natalie spend on the avocados?

Number of avocados that Natalie bought = 1 u
Number of dragon fruits that Esther bought = 1 u + 5

Amount that Natalie paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Esther paid = 0.3(1 u + 5) = 0.3 u + 1.5

If Esther spent another $0.90, both Esther and Natalie would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.3 u + 1.5 + 0.9
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 1.5 + 0.9
0.3 u = 2.4

1 u = 2.4 ÷ 0.3 = 8

Number of dragon fruits that Esther bought
= 1 u + 5
= 8 + 5
= 13

= $4.80
