A fruit stall sold peaches at 80¢ and papayas at 50¢ each. Shiyun bought some peaches and Jen bought some papayas from the stall. Jen spent $1.80 less than Shiyun, but had 3 fruits more than Shiyun.

1. How many papayas did Jen buy?
2. How much did Shiyun spend on the peaches?

Number of peaches that Shiyun bought = 1 u
Number of papayas that Jen bought = 1 u + 3

Amount that Shiyun paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Jen paid = 0.5(1 u + 3) = 0.5 u + 1.5

If Jen spent another $1.80, both Jen and Shiyun would spend the same amount.

0.8 u = 0.5 u + 1.5 + 1.8
0.8 u - 0.5 u = 1.5 + 1.8
0.3 u = 3.3

1 u = 3.3 ÷ 0.3 = 11

Number of papayas that Jen bought
= 1 u + 3
= 11 + 3
= 14

= 0.8 u 
= 0.8 x 11 
= $8.80
