0.5 |
Total value |
0.7 u |
0.5 u + 1 |
(a)
Number of plums that Gem bought = 1 u
Number of grapefruits that Tammy bought = 1 u + 2
Amount that Gem paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Tammy paid = 0.5(1 u + 2) = 0.5 u + 1
If Tammy spent another $0.20, both Tammy and Gem would spend the same amount.
0.7 u = 0.5 u + 1 + 0.2
0.7 u - 0.5 u = 1 + 0.2
0.2 u = 1.2
1 u = 1.2 ÷ 0.2 = 6
Number of grapefruits that Tammy bought
= 1 u + 2
= 6 + 2
= 8
(b)
Amount that Gem spent on the plums
= 0.7 u
= 0.7 x 6
= $4.20
Answer(s): (a) 6; (b) $4.20
