- How many dates did Opal buy?
- How much did Tina spend on the mangosteens?

Dates |
Mangosteens |
Number |
1 u |
1 u + 4 |
Value |
0.6 |
0.4 |
Total value |
0.6 u |
0.4 u + 1.6 |
(a)
Number of dates that Opal bought = 1 u
Number of mangosteens that Tina bought = 1 u + 4
Amount that Opal paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Tina paid = 0.4(1 u + 4) = 0.4 u + 1.6
If Tina spent another $0.20, both Tina and Opal would spend the same amount.
0.6 u = 0.4 u + 1.6 + 0.2
0.6 u - 0.4 u = 1.6 + 0.2
0.2 u = 1.8
1 u = 1.8 ÷ 0.2 = 9
Number of dates that Opal bought
= 1 u
= 9
(b)
Amount that Tina spent on the mangosteens
= 0.4 u + 1.6
= 0.4 x 9 + 1.6
= 3.6 + 1.6
= $5.20
Answer(s): (a) 9; (b) $5.20
