A fruit stall sold grapefruits at 70¢ and tomatoes at 40¢ each. Zoe bought some grapefruits and Jaslyn bought some tomatoes from the stall. Zoe spent $1.90 more than Jaslyn, but had 2 fruits fewer than Jaslyn.

1. How many grapefruits did Zoe buy?
2. How much did Jaslyn spend on the tomatoes?

Number of grapefruits that Zoe bought = 1 u
Number of tomatoes that Jaslyn bought = 1 u + 2

Amount that Zoe paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Jaslyn paid = 0.4(1 u + 2) = 0.4 u + 0.8

If Jaslyn spent another $1.90, both Jaslyn and Zoe would spend the same amount.

0.7 u = 0.4 u + 0.8 + 1.9
0.7 u - 0.4 u = 0.8 + 1.9
0.3 u = 2.7

1 u = 2.7 ÷ 0.3 = 9

Number of grapefruits that Zoe bought
= 1 u
= 9

Amount that Jaslyn spent on the tomatoes
= 0.4 u + 0.8
= 0.4 x 9 + 0.8
= 3.6 + 0.8
= $4.40
