Number |
1 u |
1 u + 3 |
Value |
0.6 |
0.4 |
Total value |
0.6 u |
0.4 u + 1.2 |
(a)
Number of papayas that Mary bought = 1 u
Number of peaches that Min bought = 1 u + 3
Amount that Mary paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Min paid = 0.4(1 u + 3) = 0.4 u + 1.2
If Min spent another $1.20, both Min and Mary would spend the same amount.
0.6 u = 0.4 u + 1.2 + 1.2
0.6 u - 0.4 u = 1.2 + 1.2
0.2 u = 2.4
1 u = 2.4 ÷ 0.2 = 12
Number of peaches that Min bought
= 1 u + 3
= 12 + 3
= 15
(b)
Amount that Mary spent on the papayas
= 0.6 u
= 0.6 x 12
= $7.20
Answer(s): (a) 12; (b) $7.20
