A fruit stall sold plums at 70¢ and grapefruits at 40¢ each. Nicole bought some plums and Joelle bought some grapefruits from the stall. Joelle spent $0.40 less than Nicole, but had 5 fruits more than Nicole.

1. How many grapefruits did Joelle buy?
2. How much did Nicole spend on the plums?

Number of plums that Nicole bought = 1 u
Number of grapefruits that Joelle bought = 1 u + 5

Amount that Nicole paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Joelle paid = 0.4(1 u + 5) = 0.4 u + 2

If Joelle spent another $0.40, both Joelle and Nicole would spend the same amount.

0.7 u = 0.4 u + 2 + 0.4
0.7 u - 0.4 u = 2 + 0.4
0.3 u = 2.4

1 u = 2.4 ÷ 0.3 = 8

Number of grapefruits that Joelle bought
= 1 u + 5
= 8 + 5
= 13

= 0.7 u

= $5.60
