A fruit stall sold pomegranates at 70¢ and grapefruits at 50¢ each. Esther bought some pomegranates and Risa bought some grapefruits from the stall. Risa spent $0.60 less than Esther, but had 2 fruits more than Esther.

1. How many grapefruits did Risa buy?
2. How much did Esther spend on the pomegranates?

Number of pomegranates that Esther bought = 1 u
Number of grapefruits that Risa bought = 1 u + 2

Amount that Esther paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Risa paid = 0.5(1 u + 2) = 0.5 u + 1

If Risa spent another $0.60, both Risa and Esther would spend the same amount.

0.7 u = 0.5 u + 1 + 0.6
0.7 u - 0.5 u = 1 + 0.6
0.2 u = 1.6

1 u = 1.6 ÷ 0.2 = 8

Number of grapefruits that Risa bought
= 1 u + 2
= 8 + 2
= 10

Amount that Esther spent on the pomegranates
= 0.7 u 
= 0.7 x 8 
= $5.60
