A fruit stall sold plums at 80¢ and avocados at 60¢ each. Tammy bought some plums and Vanessa bought some avocados from the stall. Tammy spent $0.60 more than Vanessa, but had 2 fruits fewer than Vanessa.

1. How many plums did Tammy buy?
2. How much did Vanessa spend on the avocados?

Number of avocados that Vanessa bought = 1 u + 2

Amount that Tammy paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Vanessa paid = 0.6(1 u + 2) = 0.6 u + 1.2

If Vanessa spent another $0.60, both Vanessa and Tammy would spend the same amount.

0.8 u = 0.6 u + 1.2 + 0.6
0.8 u - 0.6 u = 1.2 + 0.6
0.2 u = 1.8

1 u = 1.8 ÷ 0.2 = 9

Number of plums that Tammy bought
= 1 u
= 9

Amount that Vanessa spent on the avocados
= 0.6 u + 1.2
= 0.6 x 9 + 1.2
= 5.4 + 1.2
= $6.60
