A fruit stall sold avocados at 60¢ and grapefruits at 30¢ each. Ivory bought some avocados and Zara bought some grapefruits from the stall. Zara spent $0.90 less than Ivory, but had 6 fruits more than Ivory.

1. How many grapefruits did Zara buy?
2. How much did Ivory spend on the avocados?

Number of avocados that Ivory bought = 1 u
Number of grapefruits that Zara bought = 1 u + 6

Amount that Ivory paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Zara paid = 0.3(1 u + 6) = 0.3 u + 1.8

If Zara spent another $0.90, both Zara and Ivory would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.3 u + 1.8 + 0.9
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 1.8 + 0.9
0.3 u = 2.7

1 u = 2.7 ÷ 0.3 = 9

Number of grapefruits that Zara bought
= 1 u + 6
= 9 + 6
= 15

= 0.6 u 
= 0.6 x 9 
= $5.40
