A fruit stall sold avocados at 90¢ and pears at 70¢ each. Tina bought some avocados and Lucy bought some pears from the stall. Lucy spent $0.30 less than Tina, but had 3 fruits more than Tina.

1. How many pears did Lucy buy?
2. How much did Tina spend on the avocados?

Number of avocados that Tina bought = 1 u
Number of pears that Lucy bought = 1 u + 3

Amount that Tina paid = 0.9 x 1 u = 0.9 u
Amount that Lucy paid = 0.7(1 u + 3) = 0.7 u + 2.1

If Lucy spent another $0.30, both Lucy and Tina would spend the same amount.

0.9 u = 0.7 u + 2.1 + 0.3
0.9 u - 0.7 u = 2.1 + 0.3
0.2 u = 2.4

1 u = 2.4 ÷ 0.2 = 12

Number of pears that Lucy bought
= 1 u + 3
= 12 + 3
= 15

Amount that Tina spent on the avocados
= 0.9 u 
= 0.9 x 12 
= $10.80
