A fruit stall sold dates at 80¢ and coconuts at 50¢ each. Penelope bought some dates and Fiona bought some coconuts from the stall. Fiona spent $0.40 less than Penelope, but had 4 fruits more than Penelope.

1. How many coconuts did Fiona buy?
2. How much did Penelope spend on the dates?

Number of dates that Penelope bought = 1 u
Number of coconuts that Fiona bought = 1 u + 4

Amount that Penelope paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Fiona paid = 0.5(1 u + 4) = 0.5 u + 2

If Fiona spent another $0.40, both Fiona and Penelope would spend the same amount.

0.8 u = 0.5 u + 2 + 0.4
0.8 u - 0.5 u = 2 + 0.4
0.3 u = 2.4

1 u = 2.4 ÷ 0.3 = 8

Number of coconuts that Fiona bought
= 1 u + 4
= 8 + 4
= 12

= 0.8 u 
= 0.8 x 8 
= $6.40
