1 u + 3 |
Value |
0.9 |
0.6 |
Total value |
0.9 u |
0.6 u + 1.8 |
(a)
Number of pears that Zara bought = 1 u
Number of grapefruits that Rachel bought = 1 u + 3
Amount that Zara paid = 0.9 x 1 u = 0.9 u
Amount that Rachel paid = 0.6(1 u + 3) = 0.6 u + 1.8
If Rachel spent another $1.80, both Rachel and Zara would spend the same amount.
0.9 u = 0.6 u + 1.8 + 1.8
0.9 u - 0.6 u = 1.8 + 1.8
0.3 u = 3.6
1 u = 3.6 ÷ 0.3 = 12
Number of grapefruits that Rachel bought
= 1 u + 3
= 12 + 3
= 15
(b)
Amount that Zara spent on the pears
= 0.9 u
= 0.9 x 12
= $10.80
Answer(s): (a) 12; (b) $10.80
