A fruit stall sold dragon fruits at 70¢ and lemons at 50¢ each. Nora bought some dragon fruits and Xandra bought some lemons from the stall. Xandra spent $0.20 less than Nora, but had 2 fruits more than Nora.

1. How many lemons did Xandra buy?
2. How much did Nora spend on the dragon fruits?

Number of dragon fruits that Nora bought = 1 u
Number of lemons that Xandra bought = 1 u + 2

Amount that Nora paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Xandra paid = 0.5(1 u + 2) = 0.5 u + 1

If Xandra spent another $0.20, both Xandra and Nora would spend the same amount.

0.7 u = 0.5 u + 1 + 0.2
0.7 u - 0.5 u = 1 + 0.2
0.2 u = 1.2

1 u = 1.2 ÷ 0.2 = 6

Number of lemons that Xandra bought
= 1 u + 2
= 6 + 2
= 8

= 0.7 u 
= 0.7 x 6 
= $4.20
