- How much did Irene spend on the kiwis?

Number |
1 u |
1 u + 3 |
Value |
0.7 |
0.4 |
Total value |
0.7 u |
0.4 u + 1.2 |
(a)
Number of kiwis that Irene bought = 1 u
Number of plums that Hazel bought = 1 u + 3
Amount that Irene paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Hazel paid = 0.4(1 u + 3) = 0.4 u + 1.2
If Hazel spent another $0.90, both Hazel and Irene would spend the same amount.
0.7 u = 0.4 u + 1.2 + 0.9
0.7 u - 0.4 u = 1.2 + 0.9
0.3 u = 2.1
1 u = 2.1 ÷ 0.3 = 7
Number of plums that Hazel bought
= 1 u + 3
= 7 + 3
= 10
(b)
Amount that Irene spent on the kiwis
= 0.7 u
= 0.7 x 7
= $4.90
Answer(s): (a) 7; (b) $4.90
