Number |
1 u |
1 u + 6 |
Value |
0.7 |
0.4 |
Total value |
0.7 u |
0.4 u + 2.4 |
(a)
Number of plums that Roshel bought = 1 u
Number of oranges that Opal bought = 1 u + 6
Amount that Roshel paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Opal paid = 0.4(1 u + 6) = 0.4 u + 2.4
If Opal spent another $0.90, both Opal and Roshel would spend the same amount.
0.7 u = 0.4 u + 2.4 + 0.9
0.7 u - 0.4 u = 2.4 + 0.9
0.3 u = 3.3
1 u = 3.3 ÷ 0.3 = 11
Number of oranges that Opal bought
= 1 u + 6
= 11 + 6
= 17
(b)
Amount that Roshel spent on the plums
= 0.7 u
= 0.7 x 11
= $7.70
Answer(s): (a) 11; (b) $7.70
