A fruit stall sold tomatoes at 80¢ and dragon fruits at 50¢ each. Emily bought some tomatoes and Linda bought some dragon fruits from the stall. Linda spent $1.30 less than Emily, but had 4 fruits more than Emily.

1. How many dragon fruits did Linda buy?
2. How much did Emily spend on the tomatoes?

Number of tomatoes that Emily bought = 1 u
Number of dragon fruits that Linda bought = 1 u + 4

Amount that Emily paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Linda paid = 0.5(1 u + 4) = 0.5 u + 2

If Linda spent another $1.30, both Linda and Emily would spend the same amount.

0.8 u = 0.5 u + 2 + 1.3
0.8 u - 0.5 u = 2 + 1.3
0.3 u = 3.3

1 u = 3.3 ÷ 0.3 = 11

Number of dragon fruits that Linda bought
= 1 u + 4
= 11 + 4
= 15

= 0.8 u 
= 0.8 x 11 
= $8.80
