0.6 |
Total value |
0.8 u |
0.6 u + 1.2 |
(a)
Number of guavas that Nora bought = 1 u
Number of pomegranates that Cathy bought = 1 u + 2
Amount that Nora paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Cathy paid = 0.6(1 u + 2) = 0.6 u + 1.2
If Cathy spent another $0.80, both Cathy and Nora would spend the same amount.
0.8 u = 0.6 u + 1.2 + 0.8
0.8 u - 0.6 u = 1.2 + 0.8
0.2 u = 2
1 u = 2 ÷ 0.2 = 10
Number of guavas that Nora bought
= 1 u
= 10
(b)
Amount that Cathy spent on the pomegranates
= 0.6 u + 1.2
= 0.6 x 10 + 1.2
= 6 + 1.2
= $7.20
Answer(s): (a) 10; (b) $7.20
