A fruit stall sold kiwis at 60¢ and plums at 40¢ each. Yen bought some kiwis and Sabrina bought some plums from the stall. Sabrina spent $0.20 less than Yen, but had 5 fruits more than Yen.

1. How many plums did Sabrina buy?
2. How much did Yen spend on the kiwis?

Number of kiwis that Yen bought = 1 u
Number of plums that Sabrina bought = 1 u + 5

Amount that Yen paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Sabrina paid = 0.4(1 u + 5) = 0.4 u + 2

If Sabrina spent another $0.20, both Sabrina and Yen would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.4 u + 2 + 0.2
0.6 u - 0.4 u = 2 + 0.2
0.2 u = 2.2

1 u = 2.2 ÷ 0.2 = 11

Number of plums that Sabrina bought
= 1 u + 5
= 11 + 5
= 16

= 0.6 u 
= 0.6 x 11 
= $6.60
