- How many apples did Kathy buy?
- How much did Abi spend on the kiwis?

Number |
1 u |
1 u + 3 |
Value |
0.6 |
0.3 |
Total value |
0.6 u |
0.3 u + 0.9 |
(a)
Number of kiwis that Abi bought = 1 u
Number of apples that Kathy bought = 1 u + 3
Amount that Abi paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Kathy paid = 0.3(1 u + 3) = 0.3 u + 0.9
If Kathy spent another $1.80, both Kathy and Abi would spend the same amount.
0.6 u = 0.3 u + 0.9 + 1.8
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 0.9 + 1.8
0.3 u = 2.7
1 u = 2.7 ÷ 0.3 = 9
Number of apples that Kathy bought
= 1 u + 3
= 9 + 3
= 12
(b)
Amount that Abi spent on the kiwis
= 0.6 u
= 0.6 x 9
= $5.40
Answer(s): (a) 9; (b) $5.40
