A fruit stall sold plums at 70¢ and peaches at 50¢ each. Linda bought some plums and Lucy bought some peaches from the stall. Lucy spent $0.40 less than Linda, but had 4 fruits more than Linda.

1. How many peaches did Lucy buy?
2. How much did Linda spend on the plums?

Number of plums that Linda bought = 1 u
Number of peaches that Lucy bought = 1 u + 4

Amount that Linda paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Lucy paid = 0.5(1 u + 4) = 0.5 u + 2

If Lucy spent another $0.40, both Lucy and Linda would spend the same amount.

0.7 u = 0.5 u + 2 + 0.4
0.7 u - 0.5 u = 2 + 0.4
0.2 u = 2.4

1 u = 2.4 ÷ 0.2 = 12

Number of peaches that Lucy bought
= 1 u + 4
= 12 + 4
= 16

= 0.7 u 
= 0.7 x 12 
= $8.40
