A fruit stall sold mandarin oranges at 70¢ and avocados at 40¢ each. Cindy bought some mandarin oranges and Kylie bought some avocados from the stall. Cindy spent $1.30 more than Kylie, but had 2 fruits fewer than Kylie.

1. How many mandarin oranges did Cindy buy?
2. How much did Kylie spend on the avocados?

Number of mandarin oranges that Cindy bought = 1 u
Number of avocados that Kylie bought = 1 u + 2

Amount that Cindy paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Kylie paid = 0.4(1 u + 2) = 0.4 u + 0.8

If Kylie spent another $1.30, both Kylie and Cindy would spend the same amount.

0.7 u = 0.4 u + 0.8 + 1.3
0.7 u - 0.4 u = 0.8 + 1.3
0.3 u = 2.1

1 u = 2.1 ÷ 0.3 = 7

Number of mandarin oranges that Cindy bought
= 1 u
= 7

Amount that Kylie spent on the avocados
= 0.4 u + 0.8
= 0.4 x 7 + 0.8
= 2.8 + 0.8
