1 u + 5 |
Value |
0.8 |
0.5 |
Total value |
0.8 u |
0.5 u + 2.5 |
(a)
Number of pomegranates that Marion bought = 1 u
Number of plums that Fanny bought = 1 u + 5
Amount that Marion paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Fanny paid = 0.5(1 u + 5) = 0.5 u + 2.5
If Fanny spent another $1.10, both Fanny and Marion would spend the same amount.
0.8 u = 0.5 u + 2.5 + 1.1
0.8 u - 0.5 u = 2.5 + 1.1
0.3 u = 3.6
1 u = 3.6 ÷ 0.3 = 12
Number of pomegranates that Marion bought
= 1 u
= 12
(b)
Amount that Fanny spent on the plums
= 0.5 u + 2.5
= 0.5 x 12 + 2.5
= 6 + 2.5
= $8.50
Answer(s): (a) 12; (b) $8.50
