A fruit stall sold mandarin oranges at 70¢ and papayas at 40¢ each. Betty bought some mandarin oranges and Nicole bought some papayas from the stall. Nicole spent $1.60 less than Betty, but had 5 fruits more than Betty.

1. How many papayas did Nicole buy?
2. How much did Betty spend on the mandarin oranges?

Number of mandarin oranges that Betty bought = 1 u
Number of papayas that Nicole bought = 1 u + 5

Amount that Betty paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Nicole paid = 0.4(1 u + 5) = 0.4 u + 2

If Nicole spent another $1.60, both Nicole and Betty would spend the same amount.

0.7 u = 0.4 u + 2 + 1.6
0.7 u - 0.4 u = 2 + 1.6
0.3 u = 3.6

1 u = 3.6 ÷ 0.3 = 12

Number of papayas that Nicole bought
= 1 u + 5
= 12 + 5
= 17

Amount that Betty spent on the mandarin oranges
= 0.7 u 
= 0.7 x 12 
= $8.40
