Total value |
0.6 u |
0.3 u + 0.6 |
(a)
Number of oranges that Yen bought = 1 u
Number of peaches that Emily bought = 1 u + 2
Amount that Yen paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Emily paid = 0.3(1 u + 2) = 0.3 u + 0.6
If Emily spent another $2.40, both Emily and Yen would spend the same amount.
0.6 u = 0.3 u + 0.6 + 2.4
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 0.6 + 2.4
0.3 u = 3
1 u = 3 ÷ 0.3 = 10
Number of oranges that Yen bought
= 1 u
= 10
(b)
Amount that Emily spent on the peaches
= 0.3 u + 0.6
= 0.3 x 10 + 0.6
= 3 + 0.6
= $3.60
Answer(s): (a) 10; (b) $3.60
