A fruit stall sold avocados at 60¢ and plums at 40¢ each. Gabby bought some avocados and Elyse bought some plums from the stall. Gabby spent $0.20 more than Elyse, but had 4 fruits fewer than Elyse.

1. How many avocados did Gabby buy?
2. How much did Elyse spend on the plums?

Number of plums that Elyse bought = 1 u + 4

Amount that Gabby paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Elyse paid = 0.4(1 u + 4) = 0.4 u + 1.6

If Elyse spent another $0.20, both Elyse and Gabby would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.4 u + 1.6 + 0.2
0.6 u - 0.4 u = 1.6 + 0.2
0.2 u = 1.8

1 u = 1.8 ÷ 0.2 = 9

Number of avocados that Gabby bought
= 1 u
= 9

Amount that Elyse spent on the plums
= 0.4 u + 1.6
= 0.4 x 9 + 1.6
= 3.6 + 1.6
= $5.20
