0.5 |
Total value |
0.8 u |
0.5 u + 1 |
(a)
Number of dragon fruits that Irene bought = 1 u
Number of pomegranates that Cindy bought = 1 u + 2
Amount that Irene paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Cindy paid = 0.5(1 u + 2) = 0.5 u + 1
If Cindy spent another $2.60, both Cindy and Irene would spend the same amount.
0.8 u = 0.5 u + 1 + 2.6
0.8 u - 0.5 u = 1 + 2.6
0.3 u = 3.6
1 u = 3.6 ÷ 0.3 = 12
Number of pomegranates that Cindy bought
= 1 u + 2
= 12 + 2
= 14
(b)
Amount that Irene spent on the dragon fruits
= 0.8 u
= 0.8 x 12
= $9.60
Answer(s): (a) 12; (b) $9.60
