A fruit stall sold avocados at 80¢ and mandarin oranges at 60¢ each. Hilda bought some avocados and Gwen bought some mandarin oranges from the stall. Gwen spent $1.20 less than Hilda, but had 2 fruits more than Hilda.

1. How many mandarin oranges did Gwen buy?
2. How much did Hilda spend on the avocados?

Number of avocados that Hilda bought = 1 u
Number of mandarin oranges that Gwen bought = 1 u + 2

Amount that Hilda paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Gwen paid = 0.6(1 u + 2) = 0.6 u + 1.2

If Gwen spent another $1.20, both Gwen and Hilda would spend the same amount.

0.8 u = 0.6 u + 1.2 + 1.2
0.8 u - 0.6 u = 1.2 + 1.2
0.2 u = 2.4

1 u = 2.4 ÷ 0.2 = 12

Number of mandarin oranges that Gwen bought
= 1 u + 2
= 12 + 2
= 14

Amount that Hilda spent on the avocados
= 0.8 u 
= 0.8 x 12 
= $9.60
