A fruit stall sold tomatoes at 60¢ and guavas at 40¢ each. Shannon bought some tomatoes and Nicole bought some guavas from the stall. Nicole spent $0.20 less than Shannon, but had 3 fruits more than Shannon.

1. How many guavas did Nicole buy?
2. How much did Shannon spend on the tomatoes?

Number of tomatoes that Shannon bought = 1 u
Number of guavas that Nicole bought = 1 u + 3

Amount that Shannon paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Nicole paid = 0.4(1 u + 3) = 0.4 u + 1.2

If Nicole spent another $0.20, both Nicole and Shannon would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.4 u + 1.2 + 0.2
0.6 u - 0.4 u = 1.2 + 0.2
0.2 u = 1.4

1 u = 1.4 ÷ 0.2 = 7

Number of guavas that Nicole bought
= 1 u + 3
= 7 + 3
= 10

Amount that Shannon spent on the tomatoes
= 0.6 u 
= 0.6 x 7 
= $4.20
