1 u + 5 |
Value |
0.6 |
0.4 |
Total value |
0.6 u |
0.4 u + 2 |
(a)
Number of grapefruits that Sabrina bought = 1 u
Number of pomegranates that Yen bought = 1 u + 5
Amount that Sabrina paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Yen paid = 0.4(1 u + 5) = 0.4 u + 2
If Yen spent another $0.20, both Yen and Sabrina would spend the same amount.
0.6 u = 0.4 u + 2 + 0.2
0.6 u - 0.4 u = 2 + 0.2
0.2 u = 2.2
1 u = 2.2 ÷ 0.2 = 11
Number of pomegranates that Yen bought
= 1 u + 5
= 11 + 5
= 16
(b)
Amount that Sabrina spent on the grapefruits
= 0.6 u
= 0.6 x 11
= $6.60
Answer(s): (a) 11; (b) $6.60
