A fruit stall sold papayas at 70¢ and mangosteens at 40¢ each. Shannon bought some papayas and Emily bought some mangosteens from the stall. Shannon spent $0.50 more than Emily, but had 4 fruits fewer than Emily.

1. How many papayas did Shannon buy?
2. How much did Emily spend on the mangosteens?

Number of papayas that Shannon bought = 1 u
Number of mangosteens that Emily bought = 1 u + 4

Amount that Shannon paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Emily paid = 0.4(1 u + 4) = 0.4 u + 1.6

If Emily spent another $0.50, both Emily and Shannon would spend the same amount.

0.7 u = 0.4 u + 1.6 + 0.5
0.7 u - 0.4 u = 1.6 + 0.5
0.3 u = 2.1

1 u = 2.1 ÷ 0.3 = 7

Number of papayas that Shannon bought
= 1 u
= 7

Amount that Emily spent on the mangosteens
= 0.4 u + 1.6
= 0.4 x 7 + 1.6
= 2.8 + 1.6
= $4.40
