A fruit stall sold plums at 90¢ and kiwis at 60¢ each. Shannon bought some plums and Emma bought some kiwis from the stall. Emma spent $0.30 less than Shannon, but had 2 fruits more than Shannon.

1. How many kiwis did Emma buy?
2. How much did Shannon spend on the plums?

Number of plums that Shannon bought = 1 u
Number of kiwis that Emma bought = 1 u + 2

Amount that Shannon paid = 0.9 x 1 u = 0.9 u
Amount that Emma paid = 0.6(1 u + 2) = 0.6 u + 1.2

If Emma spent another $0.30, both Emma and Shannon would spend the same amount.

0.9 u = 0.6 u + 1.2 + 0.3
0.9 u - 0.6 u = 1.2 + 0.3
0.3 u = 1.5

1 u = 1.5 ÷ 0.3 = 5

Number of kiwis that Emma bought
= 1 u + 2
= 5 + 2
= 7

= 0.9 u 
= 0.9 x 5 
= $4.50
