Number |
1 u |
1 u + 6 |
Value |
0.7 |
0.4 |
Total value |
0.7 u |
0.4 u + 2.4 |
(a)
Number of dragon fruits that Roshel bought = 1 u
Number of grapefruits that Pamela bought = 1 u + 6
Amount that Roshel paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Pamela paid = 0.4(1 u + 6) = 0.4 u + 2.4
If Pamela spent another $1.20, both Pamela and Roshel would spend the same amount.
0.7 u = 0.4 u + 2.4 + 1.2
0.7 u - 0.4 u = 2.4 + 1.2
0.3 u = 3.6
1 u = 3.6 ÷ 0.3 = 12
Number of dragon fruits that Roshel bought
= 1 u
= 12
(b)
Amount that Pamela spent on the grapefruits
= 0.4 u + 2.4
= 0.4 x 12 + 2.4
= 4.8 + 2.4
= $7.20
Answer(s): (a) 12; (b) $7.20
