A fruit stall sold avocados at 90¢ and mangosteens at 60¢ each. Risa bought some avocados and Xylia bought some mangosteens from the stall. Xylia spent $1.20 less than Risa, but had 4 fruits more than Risa.

1. How many mangosteens did Xylia buy?
2. How much did Risa spend on the avocados?

Number of mangosteens that Xylia bought = 1 u + 4

Amount that Risa paid = 0.9 x 1 u = 0.9 u
Amount that Xylia paid = 0.6(1 u + 4) = 0.6 u + 2.4

If Xylia spent another $1.20, both Xylia and Risa would spend the same amount.

0.9 u = 0.6 u + 2.4 + 1.2
0.9 u - 0.6 u = 2.4 + 1.2
0.3 u = 3.6

1 u = 3.6 ÷ 0.3 = 12

Number of mangosteens that Xylia bought
= 1 u + 4
= 12 + 4
= 16
